Fellow Nigerians, yesterday the FRSC made what I will call an egregious error of judgment in banning the use of mobile phones including taking calls while driving.
This is irrespective of whether the driver is using handsfree device or factory installed communication facility in the car.
My question to the FRSC is this; the car manufacturers that made cars with facilities to receive calls without engaging physically with the phones, are they stupid? Every facility you see in a car has passed a safety assessment during quality assurance. Your phone rings while driving, you push a button on your steering and answer the call without looking to physically engage the phone.
Is the FRSC also saying that when my favourite song is playing on the radio, I cannot sing along in joy? Why then are cars built with that facility?
This position is not only laughable, it shows the pedestrian thinking of those in authority at the commission.
Don’t use your phone while driving should be limited to; making a phone call, texting, chatting, or any physical engagement with your phone. But picking a call with the inbuilt facilities that allows a driver to safely do that while driving shouldn’t even be considered an offence in any sane and serious country.
But then, this is Nigeria…
